Garden centers
don’t give up in
fall and neither
should you. Here are
our tips for potting
exciting cool-season
color that will last
for weeks.
■ Plant autumn
containers at least
six weeks before
your first frost date
so they look good as
long as possible.
■ Blend plants
that reflect the
warm hues of the
season—caramel,
orange, rust, yellow,
and rose—with
contrasting purple,
blue, deep green,
and chartreuse.
Choose containers
that coordinate.
■ Perennials, such
as
Heuchera,
hardy
mums, and grasses
are happy in pots
for a few weeks.
Then plant them in
the ground before
winter sets in.

Mums are the first
choice for fall color,
but this elegant
grouping also includes
‘Caramel'
Heuchera,
above,
and a pot filled
with blue and orange
pansies and ‘Bright
Lights’ chard.

Choose plants that
vary in form for the
nicest combos. This
pot,
right,
holds purple
fountain grass for
height, a mound of
white ‘Corrine’ mums
for filler, and pansies to
soften the edges.
